Reading Fashion Magazines

April 6, 2017

We are exactly one month away from the annual History of Dress Symposium organized by the Courtauld Institute of Art! The theme, "Reading Fashion Magazines: celebrating The Courtauld's History of Dress Journals Archive," is incredibly relevant to the exciting scholarship currently being undertaken by the department in the fields of fashion studies and dress history, notably concerning the visual experience of fashion. In particular, it examines fashion magazines as documents of the time in which they were produced, reflecting changing tastes and attitudes, social and technological developments, as well as constructing and circulating cultural and political ideas on dress, body and identity. Studying the fashion magazine as image, object, text and idea intertwined, it questions the ways dress has been documented, worn and consumed throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. I'm so excited to return to the Courtauld to be a part of the day, which is organized by my brilliant colleagues Drs Rebecca Arnold and Liz Kutesko!!
